About Us

Our Beginnings: The Vale Self Advocacy Project (2004-2005)

In July 2004, the vale Self Advocacy Project was launched with funding from the Welsh Government’s Advocacy Grant Scheme.

The project was supported by Learning Disability Wales, which secured funds to employ an advocacy outreach worker for 7 hours per week at Barry College.

The focus was on self-advocacy, empowerment, one-to-one support, communication skills, and sexual awareness.

By 2005, additional funding increased this support to 14 hours per week, benefiting a group of 20 individuals with learning disabilities.

Formation of The Self Advocacy Committee

As the group continued meeting weekly at Barry College under the guidance of Liz Davidson-Henery, the need for formal representation became clear.
Members elected a Chair and Vice Chair, leading to the formation of the Self Advocacy Committee.
Weekly meetings provided a platform for individuals to raise concerns and advocate for their rights.

I really enjoy being around happy and fun people. It always puts me in a great mood. Even though we’re not related, everyone feels like family.

  • In response to this need, and with the support of the Grant SchemeVale People First was officially formed.
